National Youth Week 2013:
5 – 13 April 2013
This year, Council’s Youth
Development staff organised
GumaROCKa!
for National
Youth Week.
GumaROCKa! began from
a need for good local
entertainment in an area of
the Adelaide Hills that has
limited options for young
people. This successful event
now offers regional bands a
venue to perform, as well
as offering young people
an opportunity for skills
development by becoming
involved in the organisation
of a youth festival.
A collaboration between
Council, Employment Options
Mount Barker’s Youth
Connections, TVCC and
AITEC, GumaROCKa! has
grown to be the largest
annual youth festival in the
Hills, with regional youth
bands, hip-hop dance
demonstrations and skate
park activities. Last year’s
event drew over 350 people,
and this year’s aim was to
attract 600 people. This year
featured a major headline
act and several supporting
regional acts.
Expect GumaROCKa! 2014
to be even bigger!

The Hills Youth Mental Wellness Project is an exciting new project initiated by the
Adelaide Hills YAC. It aims to provide increased awareness for young people and the
wider community about mental health and wellbeing.
The project has three parts and has been designed to reach as many people in the
community as possible:
•
A series of small workshops called a Friend in Need aim to increase awareness by
offering young people strategies and information on how to better support their
friends when things get tough. With a focus on learning how to apply a more positive
approach, Friend in Need empowers young people to get the most out of life.
•
Outlet is an audio-visual art project where young people in the Adelaide Hills create art
works, film, poems or songs reflecting their thoughts and feelings on mental health
and wellbeing. Outlet will become a DVD resource available to schools and posted
online.
•
Clear Headed is a community expo to be held in August. The event will offer
young people and the wider community the opportunity to learn how to support
others and apply a more positive approach to life, also enabling a better
connection with local and regional services for better mental health.
The project will be delivered by Adelaide Hills Council workers, Employment Options
and the Adelaide Hills YAC with support from Adelaide Hills Community Health Service,
the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and local high schools.
The project is funded by a Youth Connect Grant from the Office for Youth.

Lobethal Outdoor Movie Night in March at the Lobethal Primary School Oval was a
fantastic event for Lobethal and surrounding townships. This year’s movie,
The Avengers,
drew a crowd of over 100 people.
The number of local businesses and community groups contributing to the event (financially
or in-kind) grew in 2013, primarily because of volunteer Walter Jaeger pulling all the
sponsors together. The steering committee, consisting of the Lobethal Community
Association, Jo Knight of the Amberlight Cafe, both Lobethal primary schools, SAPOL Blue
Light, Torrens Valley Community Centre, Adelaide Hills Council and members of Council’s
Youth Advisory Committee, greatly thank all who contributed and made the event such a
resounding success.
