What on earth is Yarn Bombing?
Yarn Bombing is the latest fad; a textiles installation,
community expression, or, to put it simply - it’s a public
space which has been encased in knitting and crochet!
Sometimes it’s achieved by a stealthy group of knitters
who knit up a street under cover of darkness. Sometimes
it’s a popular Fringe event, such as the Yarn Bombing
featured on the lawns in front of the Coventry Library,
Stirling.
This successful event, brought together by local
community artist Deb Twining, Adelaide Hills Council and
Adelaide Hills’ Library Services, was embraced by local
schools, kindergartens, clubs and craft groups. Suddenly
and surprisingly over the Adelaide Cup long weekend, trees
were dressed in woolly jumpers and Apex Park was covered
with pom poms, finger-knitting, rugs, seaweed crochet,
teddy bears, leaves and even a crocheted tea party.
Over 100 admirers wrote comments in the Yarn Bomb guest
book, now available to view in the Coventry Library, Stirling.
The Adelaide Hills’ Digital Hub was officially opened by Mayor Bill Spragg on March 24,
along with Council’s CEO, Andrew Aitken. The opening was a great opportunity for the
community to see the latest technologies on display; these included Smart TV, Touch
PC’s, tablets, e-readers and smart phones.
Beginning in early February, before the official opening, the new Digital Hub offered
training sessions, with more than 180 people attending in the first month. With many
people now using iPads, tablets, e-readers and other new technology devices, it is clear
that lots of new users need training and assistance.
In its opening weeks, the focus of the Digital Hub was to offer training in the basics with
courses in Skype, Getting Started Using the Internet, Cyber-safety, and Accessing the
Internet proving popular. Training for tablets, e-readers and Skype continued throughout
April. Look out for upcoming sessions on smart-phones, online shopping and how to
access social media safely.
The Adelaide Hills’ Digital Hub is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 5pm;
Thursday from 10am to 8pm, and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Group training is also
held on Mondays, however the Digital Hub is not open to the general public.
If you would like to attend any of the free group training sessions, or are interested
in booking a 40-minute one-on-one session, please call us on 8408 0488 for more
information.
